Pearl Moon – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia

e-mail: moondoll@nelsonbay.com

Class Description

The focus of this class will be on drawing from the textile arts to learn a range of techniques designed to help you create your own beautiful and uniquely original dolls that are a true expression of your creativity. Starting with a basic doll shape and a molded face, Pearl Moon will teach a number of surface design techniques drawn from her years of experience as a textile artist. Venita is a 50cm. (18”) mixed media figure. The body is armatured, fixed to the stand and constructed by a combination of wrapping and stuffing techniques. The face is polymer clay and the whole figure will be covered in cloth. The emphasis in this class will be on hand embellishment techniques for decorating the figure and free form methods of embroidery, smocking, beading, wrapping and creating complex textiles will be explored. This class will not require a sewing machine or any knowledge of embroidery or beading.

Pearl Moon describes herself as a multi media decorative artist who works primarily with textiles and stitch. Over 30 years her main art obsessions have revolved around wearable art and sculptural forms. Over the last decade she has been creating mainly adornments and dolls. What unites it all and remains consistent in her art is her use of textiles, beads and stitch. Her work has been featured in "Australian Dolls, Bears and Collectables" (Vol 4, #7, 2001) and "Textile Fibre Forum" (Vol 22, issue 2, #70, 2003) and “New Directions in Altered Books” (Gabe Cyr, 2006, p131) and “Cloth, Paper, Scissors” (Winter 2004, p86 and January/February 2008, issue 16, p77). In the last 12 years she has taught many classes in Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and the USA. In 2003 she was an exhibitor at the Santa Fe Art Doll Show in New Mexico, USA. Her dolls and jewellery art are in private collections worldwide.
Pearl has always identified as a textile artist rather than a "dollmaker” and describes her cloth figurines as "embellished textiles displayed on pillars which allude to the human figure". This will be Pearl Moon’s first time to teach in Canada.
